![]() That’s how pissed we were.īut enough small talk, lets get on with this review… Christ, we dropped atomic bombs on them in retaliation. We were attacked when we had our backs turned and fought not for moral reasons or because it was the right thing, we fought for revenge. In fact, (as far as my memory goes back) this is one of the first games to feature the Pacific Theater and I’m not really sure why. Pacific Assault is quite ironically (the irony here is that it isn’t ironic at all) set in the Pacific Theater of World War II. Now, I suppose I should be more specific, because at this point, everyone and their mother (oh man, such a crappy line, “everyone and their mother”) has played a first-person shooter set during World War II. It’s more of the same game, but it’s bigger and feels more involving because strides were made not to reduce the linearity of the game but to hide the linearity of the game.įor those unfamiliar with the background of this game, Pacific Assault is a first-person shooter in World War II. Of course, if you like all the other Medal of Honor games (like I do), there’s a lot to love with this one. You might have read that Pacific Assault is different than the other games, but even with a few tweaks, it is still all about triggered events and you are still a one-man-army. The Medal of Honor franchise has always been known for its scripted, linear action, so if you don’t like that, stop reading, you aren’t going to like Pacific Assault, because in that sense this game is just the same as all previous versions. But while it does do a number of things right, when it does get something wrong, it gets it really, really wrong. Pacific Assault is definitely better than its console counterpart, Medal of Honor: Rising Sun, and it does a lot of things well. Pacific Assault is certainly an interesting game, no doubt about it. This either means that Medal of Honor: Pacific Assault (Pacific Assault from here on out) is a very challenging game to review or that the nasty cold/sinus infection that I have is reducing my already limited attention span to new, all-time low, making it hard to focus on writing. ![]() This is the third time I’ve tried to write this review. ![]() Pacific Assault is definitely better than its console counterpart." ![]() The Rod The rod arrived a short time after the reel and I knew it would be a good match, as both are made with light jigging in mind. This is a stunning piece of engineering everything about the Maxel Hybrid 20C reel just oozes good quality. ![]() The reel’s main frame is one piece, machined out of aluminium - but it’s the amount of precision-machined stainless steel components that really impressed me the most. Just prior to my writing this, the reel was dismantled for further inspection and its exterior look of quality was true of the internals, too. The drag is a star type system and has really nice adjustment with a clicker to help refine this. Once you have a decent fish on, the drag runs super smooth - not surprising, with a good number of drag washers inside the reel. This certainly assists with increased hook ups, and the powerful winding into the fish also sets the hook better. The retrieve ratio is nothing short of spot-on it can be fast-cranked or used much more slowly with quarter winds, allowing you to create different actions. Because the thumb is positioned across the release bar it’s easy to stop the spool, causing the jig to stall as it drops down. It also boasts a cast control system which is probably more designed around casting jigs up-current or ahead of the boat drift and offers excellent control, preventing overruns of the spool that usually cause bird nests in the line. The thumb bar is smooth, yet feels very positive when you’re releasing the spool to lower the jig. The Hybrid reel is perfectly balanced and comfortable in your hand, which makes it easy to operate. I never really appreciated what this type of quality reel provides until my first couple of outings - where it just ate up every bit of punishment thrown its way. Before pulling it apart for close inspection I put the reel through its paces on a large number of fishing adventures, both from the kayak and boat. The exterior finish on the reel is superb and looks beautifully made - but it’s not until you look inside that the Hybrid’s true quality is revealed. ![]() It fits around 300m of PE2 braid, and the gear ratio is 6.0.1 which produces an impressive 93cm of line retrieve per crank of the handle. The reel has a classic jigging design but is small, weighing just 378g - yet it boasts a massive 13kg of drag. The Reel Having used predominantly low-profile baitcast-type reels for light jigging in the past it was clear to me that this little beauty was definitely a cut above them in both feel and power. The two play Tim and Natalie Jones, who seem to have arrived from a planet of ridiculously great-looking Amazonian super-people. government spy, portrayed by Gal Gadot as a slightly more earthbound sort of wonder woman. And if you want to imagine what Hamm might look like in the role, you get a bit of a light dry run watching him in “ Keeping Up With the Joneses,” an amiable time killer of an espionage comedy that casts him as a U.S. But if he’s getting as tired of Bond as he has sometimes insinuated, why not let Hamm step right up? He looks like he could snap Tom Hiddleston in two. Which is to say, Hamm is the rare actor who combines old-fashioned matinee-idol dash with an impossibly cool façade and a diamond hardness that would make him utterly convincing as a lethal existential cutthroat. (Could he do the whole British thing? Of course! He’s a fantastic actor.) Now don’t get me wrong: I worship Daniel Craig. Especially given that there’s an American who was put on earth to play Bond: Jon Hamm. But given how often British actors are now hired to play Americans (do most audiences even know that performers from Carey Mulligan to Charlie Hunnam hail from across the pond?), the time may have come to break that tradition. But (as is often the case in his big screen appearances) he’s too reined in by the family-friendly context – the film goes out with a PG-13 rating in the US – to be really effective and spark the film into life.No American actor has ever been cast in the role of James Bond. The script by Michael LeSieur ( You, Me, and Dupree) provides very little for the cast to build on and even with comedy dab hand Greg Mottola ( Superbad and Adventureland) directing the film often feels flat when it should be light-footed.ĭoing a variation on his familiar deadpan act, Galifianakis produces most of the mildly funny moments as the clueless yet well meaning Jeff. ![]() ![]() All that’s left after that is for the two couples to exchange the obligatory life lessons about the value of sincerity and the need to be open to adventure. Scenes with Patton Oswalt (from TV’s Veep) as an insecure villain called Bruce Springstein (pronounced ‘Spring-stine’) mostly misfire, and the action finale delivers little in the way of thrills. Once the mystery is solved and the two couples join forces, however, the film seems to lose direction. The action follows the Gaffneys’ attempts first to befriend the Joneses – Jeff and Tim’s bromantic date in a dodgy Chinese restaurant is a fun sequence – and then to uncover their real identities as covert operatives for the CIA. Hamm (in his first significant big screen role since the end of Mad Men) and Gadot (introduced as the new Wonder Woman in this year’s Batman v Superman) are the Gaffney’s sophisticated, gorgeous and mysterious new cul-de-sac neighbours Tim and Natalie Jones. Galifianakis (most recently seen in Masterminds) and Fisher (from the upcoming Nocturnal Animals) anchor the story as Jeff and Karen Gaffney, a cosy, slightly bored suburban couple trying to adjust to their first summer without the kids at home. Without the global star power of spy romps like Brangelina’s Mr & Mrs Smith and Cruise-Cameron’s Knight and Day, however, getting attention at the box office won’t be an easy mission. Originally set for a spring launch that might have better suited its undemanding tone, the Fox release arrives in the US and the UK on October 21, as counter programming to pre-Halloween horror and early award season contenders. Once the mystery is solved and the two couples join forces, however, the film seems to lose direction And that’s a real problem for a romantic action comedy that’s always going more for humour, with a touch of sweet-natured romance, than thrills. Keeping Up with the Jonses may have twice the talent of other outings in the spy-couple sub-genre – Jon Hamm and Gal Gadot play the husband-and-wife spooks, Zach Galifianakis and Isla Fisher their bumbling foils – but its laugh quotient is pretty low. ![]() (I always take trapping so I can light fires even without a lighter - make sure the wood being used is 100% or else the torch won't be 100%).Īfter that I head north to Zom Zom's, and hit all those buildings, scavenging any urban areas between it and the cryo. Nowadays I'll kill the dogman if I go with strong/melee to make the dogman coat (requires trapping), or simply head to the woods south of cryo to make a broad spear immediately if I don't (I also make a sling as soon as possible as well). It's not a big deal, but I hate cutting the umbilical cord. I always have a tough time progressing the story because it shuts off access to the corner store. I used to make a run to the ATN Enclave first, make some moolah, then shift down to DMC, but I like DMC's gear better. I'll use it long enough to get situated, then I head to DMC as soon as possible. ![]() It feels like more of a death trap than anything. I've fixed it up plenty of times, but enemies spawn right on top of you when you're sleeping. It's not so bad when it happens right at the start, but after investing a lot of time in the game, it's a killer. But I'd invest all this time in the game, then get killed while sleeping without any opportunity to do anything. I love setting up different remote bases, with a tarp shelter, wood, water, cans for an alarm, and a sleeping bag. That's why I ended up having to do manual saves. I usually don't use cheats but I've restarted this game so many times because of quick and unavoidable deaths. I really appreciate you taking the time to have this conversation. If you're playing this game purely for the survival elements, you should really check out Unreal World. In my current run I've found the asylum, isotope mine, and ATN Enclave, playing them all out. I'm using just the skill part so I can play the game out longer and experience more of the story. Before trying this mod, I was working with a build using mostly just physical stuff so I could stay alive longer. I also keep meaning to fix up the cryo facility, so I've tried taking that and electrician (which is mostly useless early on). I also like mechanic for the same reason you mention. I can usually craft some sort of spear almost right away and it's got that nice range. I've tried range builds but I seem to use melee more often. They've got their uses but I find other things outweigh them. I've tried several different approaches to the game. I like the mod mostly for the additional content and the variety it adds to the loot. You don't have to enable the cheat that allows you to take all the skills. ![]() If your game is gaining interest please create your own subreddit for this type of content.ĥ - No racism/sexism/homophobia or hate speech.Ħ - Please keep all topics relevant to Survival games.Ĩ - No discussions on specific exploits or how to exploit or "hack".
